Large Size: National Bank Notes
National Bank Notes form the most plentiful and extensive series
of American paper money. These notes were issued from 1863 to 1929
by many thousands of banks throughout the country and in our territories,
in many denominations and in three charters.
- First Charter. Notes of the First Charter type
were issued from 1863 to 1902. Charter number one was given to
the First national bank of Philadelphia in June of 1863.
- Second Charter. Notes of the Second Charter
type were issued from 1882 to 1922. They were issued in three
types: Brown Backs, Date Backs (1882-1908 on the reverse) and
Denomination on Back (the dates were spelled out on the reverse).
- Third Charter. Notes of the Third charter type
were issued from 1902 to 1929. They were issued in Red Seals and
Blue Seals.
- Red Seal notes were issued from 1902 to 1908.
- Blue Seal notes “with dates on back” (1902-1908)
were issued from 1908 to 1915.
- Blue Seal notes “without dates on the back”
