1834 $2.50 NGC AU58 Classic Gold Quarter Eagle

Sharply struck 1834 $2.50 NGC AU58 Classic Gold Quarter Eagle is pleasing. Soft gold with a light orange peel patina. Sharply defined devises are centered in problem free fiends. Nice cartwheel effect evident. Quite Pleasing overall.

A slightly circulated gold coin, this quarter eagle saw 112,234 pieces minted in the first year of the classic head design. Designed by William Kneass this was the first quarter eagle which saw regular production without most of the mintage being melted. The reason was the slight decrease of the weight of the coin, which was changed from 67.5 grains to 64.5 grains, making the metal content in gold coins lower than the face value.

Circulation of gold coins was certainly non-existent before 1834. Not only was the face value too high for the coins to be used in general commerce, the above reason was very important. Unlike silver coins, which saw more circulation in the United States (except in certain times as the Civil War) many of these coins were exported to Europe and Asia to be melted, creating many rarities. This issue suffered less from these problems explained above.

This piece has only the slightest wear on the highest points, either from a very short period in circulation or only cabinet friction. Sharply struck, the orange gold peel surfaces are free of any major hits on the lustrous surfaces. The abundant luster definitely adds to this coin which will certainly please the buyer.
