1852 $50 NGC VF25 U.S. Assay 887 Thous. Gold Slug

Medium to deep golden in color with coppery hues in the protected areas, this attractive and large $50 slug is of the "887 Thous" variety. Octagonal fifty dollar "slugs," as they were issued by the San Francisco U.S. Assay Office, are iconic symbols of the California gold rush and dominated West Coast commerce between 1851 and 1854. While the Assay Office slugs were common in commerce during the early 1850s, such pieces were roughly handled and often spent years in circulation. Once the Federal Mint opened in 1854, innumerable Assay Office slugs met their demise in Mint furnaces, in favor of more fungible U.S. gold coins.
