This is a Fr.-289 1880 $10 Silver Certificate commonly referred to as the Morris Note or Black Back. The front shows the bust of Robert Morris who was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and superintendent of Finance from 1781 to 1784. This famous note is also sometimes referred to as the Black Back Note because of the black and brownish back design. Regardless, the back design is one of my favorites designs. I actively seek these $10 and $20 1880 silvers certificate at every show. The main issue you will see on most of these is the back design shows wear very easy. Normally you will see a frayed white horizontal fold across the middle with a whitish wear and tear. The last few I had showed the white horizontal fold line across them. The reason I jumped on this one is because there is no wear and tear tell-tell sign. This note walked up to my table at one of the last shows and I bought it. I paid a little more for it, but to me it was well worth every penny to own it in this shape. The Fr.-289 features the Bruce/Wyman signature combo and the Large Brown Spiked Seal, which is my favorite seal of all. I like any note with the large brown spiked seal.I am proud to say that there are no rips, tears, pinholes or bank marks. The margins are great and even for the grade. The brown ink has retained it color very well for a 126 year old note. The serial number is B7853172 and it is in a PCGS Very Fine-30 holder. This Morris Note will end up in someone high end collection!
